Exfoliation is necessary to remove dead cells. It makes the skin bright and glowing.

However, excessive exfoliation is harmful for the skin. This can cause swelling and irritation.

Hadley King, a board-certified dermatologist in New York, said in a report published on Well&, “Exfoliation is essential for the skin. It removes dead cells and brings freshness and glow to the skin. Helps in cleansing by unclogging the pores. However, excessive exfoliation can lead to skin irritation and many other problems.

Doctor. Here are some of the basic principles of exfoliating as offered by King.

Do not exfoliate much in the beginning

Initially, exfoliating twice a week is sufficient. The quantity can be increased later depending on the tolerability of the skin.

Exfoliate according to skin type. For many people, exfoliating daily can leave the skin dry, flaky, and irritated.

Use one exfoliant at a time

Exfoliants range from cleansers to toners, serums, and moisturizers. Therefore, it should be kept in mind that during skin care, do not use more than one exfoliator.

Doctor. According to King, “There is no hard and fast rule that enzymes cannot be mixed with hydroxy acids. Nor can alpha be added to ‘beta’. There are many products on the market in which many ingredients are mixed in tolerable amounts.” However, if two different ingredients are used together, the tolerable levels may differ. As a result, various problems including skin inflammation may occur.”

“So, be careful when using any exfoliator on the skin at the same time. But a product can be used safely if it is designed with a minimum number of components.”

using hydroxy acid and enzyme exfoliants instead of external exfoliators

Using external exfoliants like scrubs can damage the skin. Applying strong pressure many times causes wounds in the skin.

Doctor. “If you want to exfoliate safely, enzymes or hydroxy acids are safer,” says King.

These ingredients help in removing dead cells without any pressure on the skin.

use sunscreen afterwards

Whenever you exfoliate, protect your skin before you go out in the sun. Because exfoliation makes the skin sensitive and sun damaged.
